Ask a licensed provider about injectables

Wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers are given by licensed providers where state law allows. A consultation is where your questions get answered.

Areas people ask about

Injectables are discussed for different areas of the face, and the product type usually depends on the area. Wrinkle relaxers are often discussed for lines that show when you frown, raise your eyebrows or smile. Dermal fillers are often discussed for the lips, cheeks, chin, under-eye area and lines around the mouth.

That is only a map of common questions. A licensed provider looks at your face, your health and your medicines and decides what is suitable, if anything. Injectables are given by licensed providers where state law allows, and who may inject is set by California rules.

Blood thinners, supplements and bruising

Medicines come up early in any injectables consultation. Blood thinners, aspirin and some supplements such as fish oil, vitamin E and ginkgo can make bruising more likely, so a provider will want to know about them. Some antibiotics and other medicines can matter too.

Bring a full list, including things you buy without a prescription. Do not stop a prescribed medicine to prepare for an injectable unless the person who prescribed it agrees. The licensed provider weighs your list with your health history and decides what is suitable, or whether to wait.

A short list to bring

For an injectables consultation, bring:

  1. photo ID
  2. your medicine and supplement list
  3. names of any past injectables, and dates
  4. a note of any reactions or allergies
  5. your questions, written down

Some people also bring a photo from a few years ago if they want to describe something that has changed. Ask the office whether to arrive without makeup. Do not stop any prescribed medicine to prepare unless the person who prescribed it agrees.

Questions about injectables

Can I have injectables while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Most providers do not give wrinkle relaxers or dermal fillers during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If either applies, or you are planning a pregnancy, tell the provider at the start of the consultation. They will decide what is suitable, which may mean waiting.

What side effects are possible?

Bruising, swelling and tenderness where the injection was given are commonly discussed, and less common complications exist too. Ask the provider to explain the side effects for the specific product, how they would handle a complication, and who to contact afterward. For anything that worries you, see a doctor.

Will I be treated at the consultation?

Sometimes. Some providers can treat at the same visit if you both agree, and others prefer a separate appointment. Sending a request on this site does not book or commit you to anything. You can always take time to think after hearing the provider's view.
